Here's my grandma's cookie recipe exactly as she wrote it on her recipe card. These always remind me of being in her kitchen.
Opal's Chocolate Cookies
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t. vanilla
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg (unbeaten)
1/4 t. soda
1 cup sifted flour
1 1/2 T cocoa
1/2 cup nuts
Combine shortening, salt and vanilla. Add sugars gradually and cream well. Add egg and beat well. Sift soda with flour to creamed mixture and mix well. Add chocolate and nuts and blend. Drop from teaspoon on greased baking sheets. Bake in moderate oven, 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Makes 3 dozen cookies. Be sure to remove cookies from oven while still soft. (I mix my cocoa with flour.)
